Phoenix ATV Tours From Sky Harbor: How to Ride on a Layover or Arrival Day
Can you fit a Phoenix ATV tour around a flight? Drive time from Sky Harbor, the route, a realistic layover timeline and how to ride on arrival or departure day.

Yes, you can go from Phoenix Sky Harbor straight to the desert. Our Phoenix ATV tours meet at the Butcher Jones OHV Staging Area in the Tonto National Forest, about 45 minutes from the airport by car, and the tour itself runs 2+ hours. That makes it an easy arrival-day or departure-day plan, and a possible layover plan if you have roughly seven hours on the ground and can leave the airport.
Here is how the timing actually works, the route, and what to do with your bags.
The Quick Version
- Drive time: about 45 minutes from Sky Harbor to the staging area near Saguaro Lake.
- Route: Loop 202 east, north on the Beeline Highway (AZ-87), then Bush Highway toward Saguaro Lake. Paved the whole way.
- Tour length: 2+ hours on the trail, 20 to 25 trail miles.
- Arrive: 15 minutes early to park, sign the waiver and gear up.
- Getting there: rent a car. Ride-share drop-off is easy, but return pickups out here are rare.
- Price: $299 per 2-seat buggy ($150 per person), or $199 solo, plus tax and fees.
Why the Airport Is a Good Starting Point
Most visitors assume a real desert ride means a long drive out of the city. It does not. Sky Harbor sits on the east side of Phoenix, and the Loop 202 runs you east toward the Tonto National Forest without crossing downtown. In about 45 minutes the strip malls are gone and you are parking among saguaros.
That is also why travelers searching for ATV tours in Phoenix end up with us. The trailhead is northeast of the city, near Saguaro Lake, which puts it within reach of the airport, Scottsdale, Mesa and Tempe.
The Route From Sky Harbor
- Pick up your rental car. Every rental company is in one building, the Rental Car Center, a free PHX Sky Train ride from the terminals. Budget 30 to 45 minutes from the carousel to driving away.
- Head east on the Loop 202.
- Go north on the Beeline Highway (AZ-87).
- Follow Bush Highway toward Saguaro Lake to the Butcher Jones OHV Staging Area.
- Cross the cattle guard and park in the back dirt lot. Your guide will be there.
Load the map before you leave the airport Wi-Fi. Cell service gets spotty near the lake, and our maps and directions page has one-tap links for Google and Apple Maps plus the GPS coordinates. If you are ever running late, call (480) 837-3966 before you lose signal.

Can You Really Do It on a Layover?
Sometimes. Two conditions have to be true first: your ticket must let you leave the airport and come back through security, and you need enough hours. Here is a realistic timeline with nothing rushed:
| Step | Time to allow |
|---|---|
| Deplane, Sky Train, rental car pickup | 30 to 45 min |
| Drive to the staging area | about 45 min |
| Arrive early to park and sign the waiver | 15 min |
| The guided tour | 2+ hours (plan 2.5) |
| Drive back to the airport | about 45 min, more at rush hour |
| Rental return and Sky Train to your terminal | about 30 min |
| Security and getting to the gate | your usual buffer |
Add it up and seven hours from landing to your next departure is a sensible minimum. Shorter than that and one slow security line or a weekday rush hour on the Loop 202 turns a great afternoon into a missed flight. If you are cutting it close, do not book it. The desert will still be here on your next trip.
Our honest advice: a long layover works best when you book a specific departure time in advance, travel with a carry-on only, and treat the tour as the whole plan rather than one stop of several.
The Easier Option: Arrival Day or Departure Day
For most travelers, the better move is to ride on the day you land or the day you leave.
Arrival day. Land by late morning, grab the car, and you can make an afternoon or sunset departure without a scramble. Sunset tours roll out about 2 hours before sunset, and because Arizona does not observe daylight saving time, sunset in October and November falls around 5:25 to 5:55 PM. Arrive in the dark, dusty and grinning, and check into your hotel after. Our sunset tour is the favorite for exactly this.
Departure day. Check out, take a morning departure, and you are back toward the city by lunch. That leaves plenty of time for the rental return and an afternoon or evening flight. Pack the car the night before so you drive straight from the trail to the airport.
What to Do With Your Bags and Clothes
The staging area is an open dirt lot in the national forest, so do not plan on anywhere to stash bags, and storage in the buggy is limited to the passenger-side floor. So:
- Lock suitcases in the trunk, out of sight, before you arrive.
- Bring one small bag with water, sunscreen, sunglasses and any medication you need.
- Change at the airport. Closed-toe shoes are required, and clothes you do not mind getting dusty are smart. Sandals stay in the suitcase. Our what to wear guide covers the rest.
- Sunscreen before you arrive, so it has time to absorb.
Everything else is included: a helmet with face shield, a neck gaiter for the dust, a full safety briefing, bottled water, snacks and free adventure photos. A carry-on traveler in sneakers is set.
Who Can Drive (Check This Before You Fly)
Drivers must be 16 or older with a valid driver’s license in hand. A learner’s permit does not qualify. Passengers can ride from age 8. No off-road experience is needed: the buggies are automatic 800cc 2-seaters with a roll cage and seatbelts, and a CPR-certified guide leads the whole route. Driver and passenger can swap partway through, so both of you get a turn.
If you are flying in with a group of six or more, ask about round-trip pickup when you book. It solves the rental car question entirely.
Booking Around a Flight
Flights move, so build in slack:
- Book a specific time, not “we’ll see when we land.” Weekends in peak season fill first.
- Pick the later departure on arrival day if your flight lands near midday.
- Know the cancellation policy. Cancel at least 48 hours ahead for a refund, less a $25 per buggy fee. Inside 48 hours it is a 50% refund, and inside 24 hours or a no-show there is no refund. Call (480) 837-3966 if a delay puts your slot at risk; we would rather talk it through.
