How to Book a Sunset Desert Tour in Scottsdale (Self-Drive or Private)
A step-by-step guide to booking a sunset ATV or UTV tour near Scottsdale: how to pick between the shared self-drive ride and a private VIP tour, when to book, and what each costs.
The short answer: decide first whether you want the shared self-drive tour or a private one, then check the date on the booking calendar or call (480) 837-3966. Sunset is the most requested departure of the day, so book two to three weeks out, and four or more in peak season.
Here is how to make each decision.
Step 1: Pick which sunset tour you actually want
There are two, and the difference is not the trail. It is who else is on it.
The self-drive sunset tour. You drive your own two-seat buggy in a guided convoy alongside other guests. $299 per buggy, which is $150 per person when two of you share, or $199 if you want a buggy to yourself. This is the tour most people mean when they say sunset tour, and it is the one that sells out first.
The private VIP sunset tour. Your group rides alone with its own guide, at your own pace. $349 to $449 per buggy, with a two-buggy minimum, so the smallest private booking is two vehicles. Worth it for proposals, milestone birthdays, and groups who would rather not share the trail.
If you are choosing between them for a couple, the self-drive tour is the sensible default. The private tour makes sense when the occasion is the point.
Step 2: Check the date, not just the month
Sunset departure times shift through the year, because the tour is timed to the actual sunset rather than a fixed clock time. The calendar shows the real start time for whichever date you pick, which is why it is worth choosing your date before your time.
Two seasonal notes:
- October through April is peak riding weather and peak demand. Weekend sunset slots go first.
- Summer is when the sunset tour is arguably at its best, because the desert cools off and the light gets dramatic. It is also the quietest season, so availability is good.
Step 3: Book online or by phone
Online works well for one or two buggies. Open the booking calendar, choose your date, pick the sunset departure, and select how many buggies you need. It takes a couple of minutes.
By phone is better for three or more buggies, for private tours, or if you have questions about timing, transport or group logistics. Call (480) 837-3966. Group rates are available and are quoted on the call.
Step 4: Know what is included before you pay
Every tour includes the vehicle, helmets, full instruction, bottled water and snacks, and photos from the tour at no extra cost. There is no separate gear rental or photo package to decline at checkout.
Two things worth knowing:
- A team shared gratuity of 15 percent is added automatically for groups of eight or more.
- A cooling towel can be added at booking, which is a genuinely good idea in summer.
What to know before you go
Who can drive. Age 16 or over with a valid driver’s licence in hand. A learner’s permit does not qualify. Passengers can be 8 or older, and drivers and passengers can swap partway through so everyone gets a turn.
Where it starts. Tours stage at the Butcher Jones OHV Staging Area near Saguaro Lake, in the Tonto National Forest, about 45 minutes from most of Scottsdale. Tours do not start at our office, so use the staging location on your confirmation.
What to wear. Closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, and clothes you do not mind getting dusty. Bring a light layer for the sunset ride, because the desert cools quickly once the sun drops.
What to bring. A small backpack is fine. Storage is the passenger-side floor, so pack light, including any medication you might need during the ride.
Booking direct is cheaper
Our tours appear on several third-party booking sites, usually at $171 to $180 per person. Booked direct, the same seat is $150. Same buggy, same guides, same desert. The difference is the reseller’s commission.
Booking with us also means the people answering your questions are the people running the tour, which matters more than it sounds when the weather turns or your group size changes.
Ready?
Check live availability on the booking calendar, or call (480) 837-3966 and we will set it up with you. If you want the full detail on each option first, see the sunset tour page or the VIP private tour page.
